Growing Up Online

Wow. This video was insane!! Some people's views on the Internet and how it runs our lives. The 3 video(named Self Expression, Trying On New Identities) of the overall documentary caught my attention the most. I think it caught my interest because of how everyone - in our class and in the video - reacted to Jess "Autumn" Hunter's pictures. Okay, yes, I understand that she was posting half-naked pictures of herself on the Internet. Yes, I see how some people would she them and label her as a slut. A slut is defined as a woman with the morals of a man(http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=slut, December 30, 2009). Not as a young woman who likes to escape reality by posting photos, where she is wearing skimpy lingerie. No big deal. I think that if "Autumn Edows" is comfortable doing such things and it makes her happy she should go right ahead and do so. I also think that some people are being silly when they complain that they don't want to see it. If you don't want to look at it, close the page!

In the video it also mentions that Jess' Principal was the one to call the parents and spill the beans. I think that that was crossing a line. He had no business doing that. If the pictures were being taken at school or passed around or posted on boards, I'd understand. But it was a myspace page, the pictures be inaccessible(yet only as inaccessible as anything on the Internet!) to non-members of her page. He was a bit of a jerk.

So basically, she wasn't hurting anyone or herself. Therefore I see no problem with her posting such things.

Stones by William Bell

So considering I've already read half of the other choices, I am picking Stones as my book of choice from the other novels. I would mostly likely like to read this one because it has a large part doing with the underground railway and slavery, etc. I used to be really into that, and haven't been lately. May be neat to see if I still found that all fascinating. Although this book sounds more "magical" and unrealistic than other non-fiction books I have read, I a sure I'd like it on some level. Even just as something to read when I am bored!

The Book Thief - Beginning?

Wow. Big surprise. Yes, I had figured some people would die. Like Max or Hans or the mayors wife. I didn't expect EVERYONE on Himmel St. to die(with the exception of Liesel)! I mean everyone! Rudi, Tommy, Rosa, Hans and a whole bunch of others. Sweet, little innocent Liesel was just sitting in the basement, minding her own business. Then... BAM!! Bombs flatten the street. But she survives. Death watches her running around weeping. Continuously weeping. She lost her best friend and love, her "father and mother" and her neighbours. So many people. She has to live with the fact that she survived and the didn't. I'd probably feel guilty. Very, very guilty. Death doesn't really go into detail about the rest of the book beside she lives with the mayors wife and meets ax again.

As we all know, life comes to an end. Liesel's came much later. She meet Death and didn't argue just knew it was her time. She was even given back a book she had written many, many years before.

Maybe just maybe, she thinks/knows there's something beyond death. If that is at all possible....
Maybe we should find out.

The Book Thief - Something Simple

Air raids. Immediately doesn't those words make you think of war and hurt and fear. Imagine a war. There's a city. 12 000 people. In the middle of the night, an alarm goes. No big deal, right? Dad's off to work. But no, it's an alarm telling you, your town is being bombed. You have to wake up, get out of the house and to the nearest air raid shelter. But when you get there you realise one of the families that is supposed to be there too, isn't. You can't go out to see if they are alright. But you have to know. And still you have to sit and wait in the darkness. Hundreds of thousands of people are put through this still; and were put through this during the past wars. All the people that died because they were bombed.

Himmel St. is being bombed. Maybe not specifically Himmel St, but the general area. All the people of the street must go to one of the families basement and stay there until another alarm goes off so they can return to hell. (well, at least the one that is above ground.) The first raid, the basement is crazy with tired/anxious children and nervous parents. They all return to their "normal" lives afterwards and carry on. Then another raid occurs. This time it's different. Fear has settled in. Liesel, to come herself reads from her book, The Whistler. Eventually everyone in the cramped basement gathers around, calms down and listens to her read. She doesn't even realize they are listen(at first). It's cool how in a situation such as theirs, they are calmed down by a little girl reading a book about a murderer who whistles after killing his victims. Some how I don't think that story would calm me. Just saying. But I have never been in a predicimate such as theirs, so how would I know. ZJust wanted to say how odd I found it that something so simple, could mean so much.

The Book Thief - New Beginnings

So in this section, the third one, Liesel has a Jew move into her basement. Max. His father had been a good friend of Hans Hubermann. Since his father had saved Hans' life, Hans said that if Max's father's family ever needed help they could go to him. So Max arrives at Himmel St. on one dreary day/evening(?). And, well, the Hubermann's great him and allow him to "live" in their home. Liesel becomes connected to Max on a larger level than she will ever connect with anyone besides Rudi and Hans.

Now, I personally love the connection between the two of them. The Jewish man and the German girl. They are able to understand each other because they are both living in their own hell. Max, a Jewish man in a country who are killing Jews. He had his father die young. His mother is dead. As Death describes him it sound like he doesn't have much to live for. Liesel she's lost her brother and her mother all on the same day. One died, the other taken away, however now most likely dead. She doesn't know who she is. She wants to be loved but I think on some level the deaths caused her to be less able to recognize it. And happiness. For example there's this one moment, when it's winter and Liesel brings SNOW into the basement and together they create a snowman. Like how unreal and awesome is that. In fact, awesome is probably the only way to describe it.

Both have reoccurring nightmares. Both try to forget about the past and the possibility of it repeating itself. They support each other. Reading. Sitting. Sleeping. Doing regular things(as regular things as you can in that situation!). The grow to "love" each other and a "bond" is formed. When Max becomes sick you know Liesel is hurting deeply on the inside. You have to smile and her childlike hope that he'll become better and everything will be alright. Yet, we know better than that, don't we. No, yes, Max does become better. For now...

I think in a way they free each other. Allowing them to relax for the few minutes or even seconds they are together. I love the "rawness" of their relationship. How open they are with each other, even without having to say anything. I love it. There's is no way to describe how I think about it. It's neat. (You'd have to read the book.)

And then, something happens with Max...

The Book Thief - Friendship Can Become More, But Not For Both People...

Friends.
Friends are something we are lucky to get in life. We should love them and treat them with the highest respect. They make us happy, sad, angry and confused. They make us laugh and cry. Sometimes at the same time. Some make us want to be better. Other times we give them enough to want to live.

Sometimes though, friendship can bring love. Sometimes for both people, other times only one. I

In The Book Thief, Liesel's first friend is Rudi Steiner. Her next door neighbour on Himmel St. Both come from poor families. Both just trying to figure out how to survive. They do a lot together. From playing soccer in the streets to stealing from monks. They have fun together and help each other through some difficult times. However, it soon becomes clear that Rudi has developed different kind of feelings for Liesel. He says things that give away his true feeling and often asks for a kiss whenever he is down or has accomplished something "amazing". Liesel does not feel the same way. She refuses him every time. Rudi doesn't give up though, Never losing hope that one day Liesel will accept. It's kind of a wierd situation. I have never had a friend who liked me(and I didn't), who asked for kisses. It'd be sad because I'd feel like I was letting my friend down. That makes me wonder how Liesel was feeling through this book. I think that maybe she does love Rudi. She just didn't know it when the time was right.

If only she had known, when that timing was right...

The Book Thief - Death

I am in the book group reading The Book Thief. An excellent book by Markus Zusak. For this blog we had to read 110 pages. They were fairly enjoyable to read. In the beginning you could be confused about who is the narrator. Then you realize it's(never says whether it's a female or male) Death.

Death.
How neat is that. It's kind of creepy but it makes sense. The whole book is written during the holocaust. Endless amounts of people lost their lives during those years. What is that called? Death. It made me want to read ahead because I liked how Death described what was going on. Death didn't seem to like its job, not wanting to look at all the destruction and casualties. It remembers colours, describes the sky and such. It's horrible what he has to do, yet Death somehow makes it beautiful. How eerie is that? Technically, the people are about to die anyway, when Death gets to them. A person could just have been shot and lying on the ground, seconds from dieing. Death comes and takes their soul from their body and that is when they are "officially" dead. Death is taken by the main character of this book. Liesel Meminger, a little German girl who is being forced to leave her mother and go to a foster home. He first sees her when it comes to take away her younger brother(just before they are to arrive at the foster home). She is calling her brothers name, begging him to wake up. Death is upset(yes, Death has feelings) by this, even though it has seen stuff like it many times before. It decides to stay with her till the end of the small funeral. It watches her as she steals her first book. Therefore, from then on, it calls her the book thief. Unfortunatly, this isn't the last time Liesel will see Death(times that aren't her dieing). Death watches her pain and grows quite found of her.
I think it would be neat to meet Death, as Markus Zusak describes it in the book. I'm not saying that I want to do it any time soon but it sound like an interesting person. Assuming that Death is in fact a person. The way Death is written it makes me question if there were such a thing, would it be a normal person. An immortal person but still... Would Death be a skeleton, with a cape and scythe? Or would it be a man in a suit? An old woman wearing a cooking apron and carrying a spatula? A zebra with extremely human-like qualities and can talk?
Or maybe it's a little boy. With large blue eyes and shaggy brown hair. Aimlessly wandering the earth, looking for souls to take to a better place...

Advice Column... sort of

Awwww, midterms.. Time just flies, doesn't it? I actually can't believe we are this far into the school year already! Still, I wouldn't say I was a veteran, not yet at least. I have never been good at giving advice, but I shall try my hardest. The biggest one is, listen to your grade eight teachers. They know what they are talking about when it comes to studying, getting ready ahead of time and the teachers' tolerance levels, etc. At the time, I did listen but didn't completely trust what they were saying. Now I know that they knew what they were talking about! It's best to be prepared and pay attention. Also, shouldn't you know that f three is an overhead, or note on the board, you should copy it? Unless of course, the teachers says not to.
Also be open to try new things, or meet now people. Things are going to be a lot different. You are given more freedom and don't feel like the teachers are breathing down your neck all the time. It's fun. Since IDCI has like 1050 students(I think) you are bound to meet new people. DO NOT judge them based on how they look or act. In fact I have recently mad a new friend who I though was extremely geeky and well kind of creepy. He turned out to be a good friend. It was mean of me to awesome that he would be a creep.
Lastly, I have a bit of advice that doesn't really relate to the school part of the whole high school experience. It has to do with hanging out after school. To get to the point it has to do with parties. Parties, I like them and I'm sure I'm not the only one. Generally at almost all the parties I have been to there's been drinking, smoking and drugs. I think, wheat the hack, if you want to do them go ahead. Yet don't go overboard because you look like a compete idiot. You don't want to be one of those kids whose been at the party for around 30 minutes and is already passed out on the floor. You look stupid. Then kids make fun of you later and you have no idea what they are talking about. You could have been in the middle of the road, singing "hit me with your best shot" and you would have no idea. I'll admit those people make things more interesting for the people that go easy but you shouldn't want to be one of those people. So know your limits.
That's really all I can say, I'm sure by Christmas or the end of the year I'd have more to say, but for now this will do.

Take Your Kid to Work Day

My day went fairly well. I got a couple hot chocolates and the odd cookie, muffin or end chocolate bar, so really, a success. Really though, I did have tons of fun. I went to my dad's work. He's a grade six teacher at Rolph Street Public School in Tillsonburg. I got to help with math, than I taught the art lesson and enjoyed lunch in the teachers lounge(felt really cool because normally students are prohibited from going into the lounge!). After lunch, the class did a scientific experiment relating to flight. Which was actually really cool. One of the groups constructed an airplane that flew over 21 metres, whereas some models were only travelling centimetres! Next, the class had french. Which happens to be my dad's prep, so I went and helped in the kindergarten class. At the end of the day, I returned to my dad's class to watch the auction. In my dad's class, the students will earn "dollars" for doing odd jobs, extra work etc. and at the beginning of each month there is an auction for random things. Such as, choosing what to do for gym, gift cards for scholastic, choosing your seating group and free periods. School was out at 3:25pm, when we immediately left to go to Princess Anne Public School(in Ingersoll) to coach Rolph Street's volleyball team.(We won all three of the games!) I think this program is a really good idea. Even though I may not become a teacher, this wasn't a waste of time. I still would get to learn what exactly my dad has to do every week, to earn the money we use to live. I think all students should be offered this chance to watch the "experts". It's tons of fun and you get to "skip" school for a day. And well, who wouldn't want that?

William Shakespeare

Why do we study Shakespeare?

Maybe simply because he literally changed literature for the whole human race...

Or at least I think so. I'm sure there are lots of people that would agree with me. He wrote some of the most famous pieces out there.

  • Romeo and Juliet

  • The Taming of the Shrew

  • Hamlet

  • Macbeth

  • A Midsummer's Night Dream

  • The Winter's Tale

  • As You Like It

...to name a few. I think we should be studying his works and I think we should continue till the end of time! That's a bit dramatic, but I do think future generations should have the same opportunities to learn about his works. I think it is important to learn about this "stuff" for several reasons. Firstly, it's our history. We should want to know what our ancestors(or our ancestor's ancestors) found funny and normal and "a part of life". To know how they lived their everyday lives. Also, some stories could be excellent conversation pieces if you want to sound smart or sophisticated or "well-breed". Lastly, we may be able to learn about life through Shakespeare's works. To learn about hate, love, desire, madness, faith and fate. Lessons that could make our lives seem worth living. Maybe these stories give us hope, for something better. I think that, that is by itself, enough to want to study William Shakespeare.

Much Ado About Nothing

A comedy written by Shakespeare, Much Ado About Nothing is, in my opinion, just okay. Nothing special. I'll admit, if it were to be done at a theatre, I would probably pay to see it. Yet I don't think that it is one of those plays that you "have" to read or hear or see. Not like Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello or (one of my personal favourites) The Taming of the Shrew. So, in short, I did like it a little bit. I had previously known a little about this story so I was fairly capable of following the movie. If I had not have had a previous knowledge of what was going on, I think I still would have been able to follow it because the actors used facial expressions and gestures constantly. Non-verbal communication is sometimes easier to follow, than the words they were saying. I also "understood" the story. I knew what was happening when it was happening, for the most part. I only got a little confused at the parts when Dogberry and his assistant(whose name has currently slipped my mind) were in. The were fairly confusing and awkward but very humorous. Also there were times in the story where I thought they were a little over dramatic. Although what do you expect, it's Shakespeare!

The Most Dangerous Game

Majorly disturbing book. This guy is hunting humans. Murdering is the proper term really. It's very gross and twisted. I wish we didn't have to read it but what can you do?? Although I obviously didn't like it, it was hard to put down. It pulled me in and I didn't put down the book until I had finished it. No matter how sickening it was. I personally am not a hunter and am completely against it being a sport. Which is how hunting is in the book. In fact, the main character Rainsford is going to South America(or was it Africa?) to hunt panthers. Panthers! When a man has a powerful gun and a panther has nothing but the protection of the night. it's easy to see who is going to win that game. It's mean and unfair. It would be a bit more fair if we gave the panthers guns and opposable thumbs! Of course, the still probably wouldn't figure out how to use them, it's still a thought. Maybe we should arm all animals we hunt with guns and then see who wins. Or take away our guns and give them to the animals. They may still be unable to use them, but they'd kick our buts still. Just because we are "smarter" then them at certain things(mechanical/technological) we apparently "rule" the world. I'm getting of topic though, so if you are looking for a intriguing, short story read The most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell.

A Knight's Tale

As you all know we have been watching A Knight's Tale the past few days in English. I would have to say it's a pretty cheesy movie. It's fairly predictable, until the ending. I can't say I loved it. Heath Ledger is a total cutie though. He made the movie better than it actually was. Plus I loved the author. He was the guy who has a gambling problem and was naked half of the time. He was hilarious. He also made the movie so much better than it was. I am kind of embarrassed because I found the part when William(Heath) is reunited with his father happy. And, well, I cried. It was fairly happy though. I know it's a ll fake but it gives you such a warm feeling. Like his fathers blind and even though he can't see William jousting he has the largest smile on his face. And he couldn't be more proud of anyone else in the world. It makes me want to cry(but I will not!). The soundtrack was a bit odd. I mean ACDC? Not to sure what that was about...
Also a lot of things that occurred I am sure would not have happened in those times for real. Like making out in public? No. That would be considered a huge disgrace.
I like the saying William uses. The one about being able to change your stars. I think that's neat. Kind of pretty? Once again not going to lie, wouldn't watch again if I had a choice...sorry.

Lessons in Heartbreak
by Cathy Kelly

Hear is the lyrics the song I chose - Screaming Infidelities by Dashboard Confessional

Screaming Infidelities
-Dashboard Confessional

I’m missing your bed
I never sleep
Avoiding the spots where we’d have speak
And this bottle of beast
Is taking me home

I’m cuddling close
To the blankets an sheets
But your not alone, and your not
discreet
Make sure I know who’s taking you
home

I’m reading your note over again
There’s not a word that I
comprehend
Except when yo signed it
I love you always and forever

Well as for now Im gonna hear
the saddest songs
And sit alone and wonder
How your making out

But as for me, I wish that
I was anywhere with
anyone
Making out

I miss your laugh
How did it break?
And when did your eyes begin to
look fake?
I hope your happy as your
pretending

I’m cuddling close
To the blankets and sheets
I am alone
In my defeat I wish I knew you
were safely at home

Im missing your bed
I never sleep
Avoiding the spots where we’d have
to speak
And this bottle of beast is taking me
home

Well as for now I'm gonna
hear the saddest songs
And sit alone and wonder
How your making out

But as for me, I wish that
I was anywhere with
anyone
Making out

Your hair, it’s
everywhere
Screaming infidelities
And its taking its wear

Your hair, it’s
everywhere
Screaming infidelities
And its taking its wear

Your hair, it’s
everywhere
Screaming infidelities
And its taking its wear

Your hair, it’s
everywhere
Screaming infidelities
And its taking its wear

Viral Videos

Viral videos are most likely so popular because they are entertaining. The could be about the dumbest things, but they may be entertaining to some people. When you watch the video of the top 100 or whatever videos a lot of them are of people pulling stunts, falling/tripping/making fools of themselves, dancing or just saying random stuff. i don't know why it's these particular videos people are so attracted to. I suppose it's because something about them is either making us feel better about ourselves or makes us want to be more or something better. I could be totally wrong, but it is what I think.

Out of all the videos shown in the clip my favourite is the one with the men and the lion(Christian). I originally saw it on Oprah and to be honest cry every time I see it. I think it is the most beautiful(for lack of a better word) video ever. The feelings shown by the men are raw and out there for everyone to see. Plus the connection between them and the lion is just unbelievable. It's amazing. I'd recommend everyone one I know to watch it.

Johnny 99 - Bruce Springsteen

My group was assigned Johnny 99 by Bruce Springsteen. A fairly depressing song. The lyrics are alright. Nothing special. Pretty much what happens is a man loses his job, gets drunk, then kills a man. He gets caught by the police and is taken to the judge. Who sentences him to 99 years in jail. Johnny doesn't want this and asks to be sentenced death row. Pretty depressing, no? It doesn't relate to any of my experiences because I don't know anyone on death row(I kind of hope I never will). Honestly I didn't really like the song. Sounded to different. Wasn't what I like personally. I am sure there aer people who would love it but it's not for me. I did however like some of the other groups songs, such as Cats in the Cradle.

Did You Know 3.0

Wow. What an eerie video. It truly makes you stop and think. Right in the beginning it says that we are preparing students for jobs that don't even exist yet. That is insane. When my mom was a kid she knew she wanted to be a RN, her brother knew fashion was his calling and my grandpa wanted to continue with the sawmill. It was simple and easy. Their dreams were able to become true. Now our generation, that's a whole different story. Some of us may have dreams but we don't know if they are reachable. Then there's the rest of us, we don't know what we want because half(or maybe even more) of the jobs that will be available when we are ready to work do not even exist now! For all we know there could be a job in the future where all you had to do was scream into a bottle to create energy, just like in MONSTERS INC. We don't know, and its something weird to think about.

Also we are preparing the student to use technologies that don't even exist yet. They don't know what they are preparing us for but they are trying. They are doing this all to prepare us to solve future problems, even though we don't know that they are problems now. It just blows my mind.

Then at the end of the video it mentions how throught out the video 67 babies were born in the U.S., 274 born in China and 395 born in India. That is an insane amount of babies and that is only 3 countries. There are roughly another 190 countries with reproducing humans in. Probably while I've been write this another 500 babies have been born in India, China and the U.S. Those are huge numbers. Probably half of those babies wont survive because of lack of health care or are born into poverty. It's sad really. But this also means there are a lot of happy people all over the world. That's a bit happier thought.

Really, I don't know what to think, it was knid of shocking. Some of the things mention were just mind blowing.

Book Study - Journal Entry #6

Lessons in Heartbreak
by Cathy Kelly

Wow. Which characters are my least favourite? They would defiantly have to be Patrick, Joe and Jamie.(I probably sound like such a man-hater.) They are the cheating husbands. They know what they are getting themselves into but don't seem to care about how the woman feel. They may say other wise, but they are with Izzie and Lily mostly for the fun. Not the love. I they were, they'd leave their current wives and get together with the two woman. Yet nothing ever works out like that.

Joe. Joe is the multi-millionaire who woes Izzie. They met at an art auction. The sparks flying immediately. They meet for an "innocent" lunch. So enough they are dating. Joe tells Izzie he is separated from his wife, but still living with her to make his sons happy. For they don't know about the separation. Right away Izzie should of walked away. And she did, but Joe came(being all sexy and all) and convinced Izzie it was over. then one day during a date, Izzie discovers that Joe's marriage is defiantly not over. In fact he is with her STILL IN LOVE with her. Joe does eventually decide he wants Izzie, but is unwilling to have her children. Izzie leaves him.

Jamie. Jamie is the injured marine Lily meets at her best friend's sister's wedding. She's the maid of honor. He's the best man. Fairytale story, right? No, I don't thinks so. The exchange a kiss, then don't see each other for a month. Upon their second encounter, they start to have some "fun" on the kitchen counter. Although they are quickly interrupted by Lily's best friend's sister. who knowing what has been going on brings up that Jaime has a wife back in Scotland. Lily is devastated . Jamie didn't even tell her he had a wife. He completely led her on. That was mean. He is probably my absolute least favourite.

Patrick. Aww Patrick. He is married to Anneliese. Anneliese goes to church and when she returns she finds Patrick with her best friend, Nell.(They weren't doing anything inappropriate.) Anneliese had thought everything was okay with her marriage. Apparently she couldn't have been more wrong. With her best friend too. Anyway, Patrick was the type of guy who didn't say anything for years, then found someone to vent to and feel in love with her. Even when Anneliese did find out he didn't say anything. He just sat there as Anneliese broke down and watched as Nell yelled her. It was horrible. He isn't much of a man if you ask my. I think he is a coward.

A man is all you need to create havoc and these three prove that.

Book Study - Journal Entry #8

Lessons in Heartbreak
by Cathy Kelly

Yeah!! My last journal entry. This means I have finished the book. Over all it was pretty good. I'm not sure I would recommend it to someone because it wasn't wonderful. Yet still I didn't feel like I wasted my time when I finished it. Anyway in the end it tells you pretty quickly that(**note if you want to read this book skip ahead until the next paragraph**) Lily, the grandmother died, Anneliese is not longer as depressed, Jodi is pregnant, Beth had her baby and Izzie broke up with Joe. So for the most part it was happy. Although this might sound bad, Lily's death kind of freed all the other woman. It helped them accept lives challenges and the obstacles that were sure to come in the future. Of course I was happy to hear that Patrick, Jamie and Joe(the cheating husbands) were out of the story for good. Au revoir is all I can say. Thank goodness. No one should have to deal with what those wives/mistresses did. I guess I am being kind of mean. Though right now I am not impressed with the whole male race based on this book.

Another thing would be that this novel ended very abruptly. It was like BAM! Lily's dead, Joe's gone, someones pregnant and there's a new baby! BAM! The end. I don't like that because I don't know if things worked out or if things were even more screwed up then before. So that makes me kind of iffy. On the other hand I did like it because I can pretend that "they all lived happily ever after". I'm sure that they probably didn't, but it sure is a nicer way to look at things. I can pretend Izzie fell in love with some handsome model. That Jodi didn't experience a miscarriage for the tired time. That Anneliese was completely happy being alone and free. That Beth's baby would stay healthy. Possibly even that Lily went to heaven(if you believe in that stuff). I don't know, maybe that stuff did happen. Or maybe Anneliese married the man who saved her when she tried to kill herself. Maybe Izzie becomes gay. Maybe Jodi ends up having sixtuplets. I guess you could say I like that the book ended so abruptly because now my imagination is all over the place, thinking of the possible outcomes/futures.

So, that is all...
Until the next blog or novel study
Bye Bye

In this book Izzie and Anneliese both have a special but different relationship with Lily. Lily is Anneliese's aunt and Izzie's grandmother. Since Izzie's mother died when she was so young, Lily and her father were the only people to raise her. She made an extremely close relationship over the years with her grandma. Often in the novel whenever Izzie doesn't know what to do, she asks herself what Lily would do. Her grandmother is her biggest role model. To Anneliese, Lily was the woman she could talk to about anything. Lily was so excepting and loving, that there wasn't ever any tension at all. Since they made such close bonds with Lily, it seemed harder for them than the rest of the family when she became ill.

Reading the parts in the test where it spoke of the relationships and hardships during the sick part it reminded me of some of my relatives who I have special kind of relationship with and who are role models to me.

Like my grandma. Heather Hopson. She's always been there for me. Understanding me when my parents or friends couldn't/can't. She is obsessed with shopping. She taught me everything I needed to know about shopping. Best times to shop in certain stores. The best stores in the US(and they are actual stores I like). The best way to get what you want. How to plan all the places you wanna hit within a hour. The perfect times to have breaks. And everything else you can imagine(or can't) you would need to know. She also knows that if my parents say I can spend $100, we can get away with $175 or sometimes $200. She is the klutziest, most scatterbrained person I have ever known. She spoils us 'til we are choking in her gifts. She sends a card for every occasion and invites over literally every weekend. she makes me smile, knows what makes me laugh and cry. I inherited my looks, obsessions and traits from her. I love her like crazy, she is also an amazing cook(she makes chocolate suckers and pickles!!).

As I am writing I am at my 2nd cousin Bonnie's house for thanksgiving. She is amazing. She is totally different from everyone I've met. Sadly, I rarely get to see her, but when I do, we have a total blast. For example, almost every summer she'd rent a campsite at Long Point. My family and I would go and stay with her for a day or two. During the day we'd spend the whole time at the beach burying each other in sand, making sand cars and collecting beach glass and stones(and finding dead fish). She'd always lather up sunscreen, but no matter what get badly burned. Then at night it be back t the campsite for the fun. The campfire!! We'd make marshmallows and s'mores. And all these other creations we'd come up with. She'd bring silly putty and we'd play tricks on each other. We'd add things to the fire so it would change from red to green to blue to purple. We'd attach sparklers and glo-sticks to string and whip them around and playing jump rope. She'd make us laugh when she told us to pull her finger and she'd make a farting noise(she'd probably kill me if she knew I wrote that). I love how accepting and hilarious she is. I can't even write all the fun times I've had with her. Like I said I never get to see her, even though she only lives in Welland.

I thank my lucky stars that those two are a part of my life. And that is only two there's still all my other family members who are special to me. Luckily some of those special people are still ere with me and are in good health. But I don't know if I tell them or show them how much they do mean to me. I know they love me and I know I love them. But do they know I love them?? Maybe it's time to show how much I do, more. Ahhh, just something to think about. Well, time for Thanksgiving dinner(pizza) and entertainment(Rush Hour)

Show how much you love someone and are thankful that they are around!

Happy Thanksgiving

p.s. I know this isn't related at all but watch this, it cracks me up(it's super cheesy)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PjBeQNnDvVI&NR=1

Lessons in Heartbreak

by Cathy Kelly

I feel the need to write about one of the main characters, Anneliese. In the beginning of the story she appears very happy and content with how her life is going. However when she finds out her husband was/is cheating on her with her best friend things start going down hill. She explains how she'd suffered from depression in the past. Always feeling horrible. Slowly she falls back into depression. She no longer cares what the neighbours think of her and is afraid of running into Edward(her husband) and Nellie(her ex-best friend). One time when she is going out for tea with Jodi(the writer) she does run into Nellie. In the middle of the restaurant she blows up at Nellie. It was pretty intense. After this though things get even worse.

A whale has been caught in the rocky water below and no matter how much people try to help she will die. Anneliese begins to understand and relate with her. She finds herself wanting to join the whale. She walks to the beach, into the water and keeps walking. She knows what she is doing to herself but she almost likes what has been "decided" for her. She is saved by a village man though and her brain kicks in. She realized she didn't want to die after all. She is admitted to a hospital, where she stays for a little while.

Just think, one day she was on top of the world and then the next trying to end her life. It's a sad thing really. Although it is a lot more common than we think. I know several people(who will remain anonymous) who have suffered from depression in the past or still are dealing with it now. It is a horrible thing. Sure at some point in every ones life they will feel depressed but to have to deal with it your whole life... it's just something else. I know people end there own lives every day, maybe it was the only way to be free of the pain. Though this may sound horrible and twisted, maybe they are right. Maybe that is the only way they will be happy. Not saying that I think everyone should end their lives to be happy, I'm just saying if that is the ONLY way, I see no problem. It would probably cause others great pain but shouldn't they be happy you are in a better place?

I guess I really don't know what to think of the whole thing...

Values. What are values exactly? On dictionary.com it says
17. to consider with respect to worth, excellence, usefulness, or importance.
18. to regard or esteem highly: He values her friendship
are just a couple of the many definitions.
It can also mean what you believe in and what you stand for. All of the woman in this book believe in love but that it is cruel to most who happen to fall in it. All of the woman are indifferent situations but they all believe and wonder why something so wonderful can be so horrible at the same time. Three of the four woman's love story involves infidelity, one finds her best friend and husband together while the other two are the mistresses. The two know what they are doing is wrong, but they keep having the affair. In the one case the man lied to Izzie saying he was separated from his wife. I think in these two cases the men are at fault not the woman. They didn't mean to fall in love with the men, and when they did, they knew nothing would ever come from it. The men went back to their wives, leaving the mistresses in the dust. In a way they were going against everything they believed in. Lily went against what she'd been brought up believing. Her religion. In her religion she is not to commit adultery and even if the man (Jamie) divorced his wife she couldn't marry him. That was also against her religion. In fact there is one point that she says she may be committing a sin, but she doesn't care. Apparently she'd rather go to hell. Izzie never wanted to be one of those mistresses, hidden from everything(everyone). She didn't want to have to hide her love, but somehow she was "sucked in" by this Joe. She also went against everything she believed.

All the women in this book believe in themselves. They know they will know what the right thing to do is, when the time comes. They all have faith, in themselves, their family and friends and in God. They think that as long as they love Him, all will work out eventually. And in some kind of way it does.

I guess you could say my values are similar in some sense. I do believe that cheating is horrible . defiantly not something I would ever wish upon someone. I believe my family and friends are the most important and special hings in our lives. we should never let go of them. Things may be messed up sometimes, there will be highs and lows(don't I know it!), just as long as you love them and are willing to try hard to work things out, all will be okay. I love my family and friends, I rust them with everything I have. Without them, I see no reason to live. I guess you could say that I believe there is no life without love. (Kinda dramatic) Now, I don't really know what to think on the whole religion part. I have extremely religious relatives who have tried to persuade me to have faith, but I don't know yet. I am only fourteen so I have plenty of time to think about that stuff(hopefully), so can't really relate in that sense. I am also sure my family share the same values as me and Izzie, Jodi, Lily and Anneliese. So my values are to stay true to myself and that my family and friends are the best "gifts" I'll ever get.

I don't know if you would have noticed or not but when it comes to fashion, there are usually models involved. These models tend to be insanely beautiful, tall and unnaturally skinny. Izzie(one of the main characters) works at a modelling agency and she notices. She watches as the starve themselves, convincing themselves all the need is water and cigarettes. Throughout some of the chapters it tells of how many woman try to look like models even though it is unhealthy and like I said unnatural. She wishes there were real woman to model clothing, as I recall she said real goddesses not boy-like teenagers. One of my many uncles works in fashion and he has explained that models are usually super skinny because they are best for showcasing the clothes. A model is not meant to outdo the clothing. A show is about looking at clothes not models. It just do happens majority of the clothes look best on skinny, tall and shapeless girls.(No offence intended to anyone.)

I feel that because the models look like this, woman and young girls feel pressure to look like this also. We should be comfortable in our own skin. We should know that true beauty doesn't mean you have to starve yourself. Some of us do, but not enough. How many stories do you hear of young girls and woman getting eating disorders because their idol is three sizes smaller than they are? What kind of idol would think that people should eat less just to look more like them? Not a very nice one, that's for sure.

I think woman, girls, young ladies (and the guys too) should be comfortable with their size. They may not like certain parts to their body but they'd know it's their unique body shape that makes them a real beauty.

For example: I am a fourteen year-old-girl who is 5 feet 4" and I weigh 117Ilbs. I am physically fit and sometimes I don't like my "ballet" feet or my dagger-like elbows but I know I am perfect the way I am.

So how about you?

...

Are you comfortable in your skin?

Do you think there should be more 'real' woman in the fashion industry?

Lastly, I challenge you to comment, add your body shape and your opinion...

Remember we are all beautiful, no matter what!

Lessons in Heartbreak

After having read half of the book, I find it to be an alright book. Not the best book ever but not too shabby. I did find it kind of confusing because in the middle or end of the chapter it would bounce from each different characters point of view. Also the time changed every now and then either back a few months or decades. You get the gist of what is going on as long as you pay close attention.

Looking back on what I have read so far, I suppose this story could happen. Maybe not to the same family, all at once though. Husbands leave their wives all the time(just as wives leave their husbands). Sometimes they leave because there is someone else. In fact, it is probably one of the more common break-ups because I know two couples which broke up for this reason(And no they were not 14-year-old girls and guys). As well as their are probably tons of woman all over the world who are having affairs with married men. Once again I'm not going t say I think it is right to cheat on your spouses but I'm not saying it's wrong either. That's all I have to say for now... ta ta!

Book Study - Journal Entry #1

For the book study I am reading Lessons in Heartbreak written by Cathy Kelly. I was to find a book last weekend but Sunday night came and I still didn't have one. One frantic phone call to a friend and I had a book. I had no idea what it was about till a couple hours ago. The story of four different woman going through the struggles in life. Izzie, a worker at a modelling agency in New York, who falls in love with a man who ends up being married. Across the ocean in Ireland, Anneliese(Izzies aunt) husband leaves her for her best friend. Izzie's grandmother suddenly becomes very sick, and secrets from her past are reveled, surprising everyone.. Lastly, Jodi, who recently moved to Ireland with her husband to try to forget about a recent miscarriage.

As you may have noticed, infidelity plays rather large part in the novel. For those of you who don't know what that means, it is to commit adultery, to be unfaithful, to cheat. Just a quick thought in the subject. In Izzie's case, she doesn't realize she is wrong...in the beginning. She is thirty-nine year-old successful woman who thinks something is missing in her life. Then she meets Joe. A wealthy businessman in NY. Things start out wonder full. Than she discovers he is still married. Not separated like he said. Plus he has two teenage sons. Imagine the shock of that. She wasn't going out with Joe in hopes of marriage just to get money. She wasn't using him purely for sex. She was just wanted a future with the man she loved. Her dreams were pretty much spit on. An outsider(such as Joe's wife's sister) would accuse Izzie of being a goldigger. Which she isn't. Izzie didn't commit any crime and yet she feels like she did. She is taking all of the blame and realizes she doesn't want to be "the other woman". When she approaches Joe, she learns he has no intentions of leaving his wife. Izzie is heartbroken. The scandalous affair doesn't end there, but lets move on to Anneliese's situation.
Anneliese believes everything is fine with her marriage until one day, she returns from church to find her husband embracing her best friend, Nell. She fights with Nell while Edward) her husband) stay quiet. Nell continuously saying how Anneliese must have known. Anneliese had no idea. She woke up that morning knowing she loved Edward and thinking he loved her. To be thrown into a situation such as this would not be a walk in the park. Anneliese had a history of depression and slowly she sinks back in. What kinda of friend does that make Nell? A horrible one. I couldn't imagine doing that to a best friend of mine, just as I cant imagine one of my friends to do so also. Now, I'm not judging really. I suppose it could happen to anyone at anytime but I would never wish that upon someone. Though I can see it from Izzie's side of the story. She didn't realize she'd walked into uncharted waters, she just though she was in love and someone loved her back all the same. I suppose if you truly loved someone more that anything you could cheat. I'm not saying I think it is right or wrong. I'm only a fourteen-year-old girl, what do I know?

Lamb to the Slaughter

As a group, the class read Lamb to the Slaughter by Roald Dahl. The story starts off by telling about Mary Maloney, woman who is six months pregnant and the perfect example of a stepford wife. She is literally obsessed with her husband, Patrick and making him content. When he arrives home after work(he is a police officer), Mary makes drinks and after consuming two very strong drinks, Patrick announces that he is leaving her. Mary is clearly shocked. Since Mary is almost controlled by Patrick, she doesn't know how to react. So she continues on as if nothing is wrong and starts making supper for him. After grabbing a frozen leg of lamb from the freezer she finds Patrick by the living room window and whacks him over the head with the meat. He falls to the ground and Mary assumes he is dead. Then she continues to prepare the lamb. As she is doing so, she contemplates turning herself in to the police but she doesn't know if she was found guilty if the public would demand her baby be killed also. Because she doesn't want her baby to die she decides to lie and cover up her killing. To cover it up she goes to the grocer store and acts as if everything is alright. When she returns home she sees Patrick on the floor and cries her heart out. Next she calls the police station and they come to confirm that Patrick is dead. As the investigate the realise Patrick must have been killed from a heavy metal object such as a sledge hammer. The police do not suspect Mary to be the killer because she has an alibi(the grocery store) and the grocer Sam says Mary was acted perfectly normal. As it becomes late and Mary offers supper to the officers. They all stay and eat the leg of lamb. While they are eating one says that the murder weapon is probably right under their noses and in the other room Mary giggles.

Now to be perfectly honest, I love this story. When it comes to intriguing and eerie stories Roald Dahl never disappoints. It was very well written, making me want to read ahead. The beginning makes you think the story will be about the new family's adventure, with a new baby on the way. Yet when the husband comes home and is acting weird you begin to question what the story is really about. And then WHAM! Mary kills Patrick. You read on as it speaks of her rage, then pain and next her cunning plan. The ending is extremely humorous, making you literally laugh out loud(at the very least, it made me laugh). I really enjoyed this story and from now on whenever a guy is being mean, I'll know to simply threaten him with a leg of lamb.

The Lunch Date

Today in English we watched a short film called "The Lunch Date". It was based on people being to quick to judge based on how a person is dressed or their race and not to jump to conclusions.

A quick summary is that a rich, snotty, white woman misses her train and goes to the train station cafeteria to eat a salad. Shew leaves her bags and salad on the table while trying to find a fork. When she goes back to where she had been sitting a kind, black man is eating a salad. She gets aggressive but the man doesn't give up the salad. They end up sharing. Then the man brings them coffee. The woman leaves but then hurries back because she left her shopping bags behind. When she returns the man and bags are gone but when she gets to the booth beside where she sat with the man she finds her bags and untouched salad. She laughs and goes on with her day.

She had thought the man was a homeless man stealing her food just based on how he looked, black, scruffy and not very well dressed. So she jumped to conclusions. At the end she does laugh though. Yet even though she was mistaken she appeared to make the man just by eating and sharing a cup of tea with him. The whole time she thinks he's a bum and he think she's just a nice lady in need of company.

I really enjoyed this short film. It was a really good story with a great ending. I will admit that I thought the man stole her salad, I was too quick to judge. In that situation I would probably think to myself "That man is taking my salad, what a mean man." Although I probably wouldn't confront him. If someone wanted my food enough to steal it, they can have. Yet he didn't steal it, it was his and he still shared it with the woman. It could have been his first meal in days or his last for awhile. He was that kind. I wish more people were that kind and in a perfect world, that we weren't so quick to judge.

Grade 9

In English today we listened to the song "Grade Nine" by The Bare Naked Ladies. The song is just about some of the difficulties grade nines go through to try to fit in and stay "cool". Such as getting the cool clothing or binders. I suppose the song was alright but it isn't something I would normally listen to.

Mr. McGuchan also asked us all to report on our first week of high school. The first day of school was the eighth of September, 2009. I guess you could say it started out just as any other school day. Waking up way before your normal time, not knowing what to wear and at the last minute, realising you cant find your pencil case. Except for this year was my first year on a bus. I have to get on at the end of my street, so that means every morning I have to leave the house at 7:30am to make the bus at 7:40am. Normally, back when I was in elementary school, I wouldn't even be awake yet.

Anyway, I got to IDCI around ten to eight. I found my locker(had a little trouble trying to open the lock!), dumped all of my stuff in and grabbed everything I would need for my first two classes, Science with Mr. Palermo and Geography with Ms. Bedford. I looked down the hall, saw a couple friends from my first class and was on my way. I even got homework on the first day. Fun! Fun! At lunch I sat in the cafeteria with a bunch of friends. Then showed up to English half an hour early. That was a bit odd. Then I had Family Studies and the day was over. Although I did get on the wrong bus. Apparently the one I got on was heading to Mt. Elgin, not Clarke Side Road. Luckily I figured out in time that I was on the wrong bus and got on the correct one.

The rest of the week went smoothly, with little to no mishaps. One night I had three hours of homework, which honestly was kind of neat because in grade 8 I probably had three hours of homework in total. The only other mishap was on Friday. I was talking with a friend after school was out in the hall. I suddenly remembered that I have to take a bus now. So I missed the bus. It drove away just as I was walking outside. That was pretty funny. I did make it home in almost the same amount of time it would take on the bus.

All in all I would call my first week at high school a success. I didn't get shoved into a locker and wasn't taped to a pole, thank goodness. I didn't show up at the wrong class or get lost. All of my teachers are funny and different in many ways. I enjoy being in their classes and can't wait for all the other fun times I'll have this year.

Here is a YouTube video of The Barenaked Ladies preforming Grade Nine. Before Grade Nine is their song I can sing(I think). Grade Nine starts around 30 seconds.

Mella

In English class, we read an African myth called Mella. In summary, a story of a girl whose love for her father helps her overcome fear of the Python Healer, and in the end is rewarded with friendship and respect. In general I did like the story. Firstly because it explained(in detail) the hard journey Mella had to take to reach the Python Healer. Secondly, even though all the animals in the jungle "warned" Mella not to let the Python Healer wrap itself around her body, she did. Lastly, in the ending Mella is rewarded with friendship and respect. Although, when it told about Mella's three brothers wanting to steal the Python Healer's gold, I felt that made the story a bit too detailed and was off point. I do understand that the story tellers added it to say Mella repaid the Python Healer. I think anyone with a craving for an African myth with love, courage and honesty I would recommend Mella.
